Leslie County Animal Shelter

Hyden, KY

The Leslie County Fiscal Court has been working tirelessly to improve the county shelter for the animals, the employees, and the community.

The shelter is more beautiful.

Generous local citizens paid for two murals to be installed on the main building. Leslie County Resident, Derek Lewis, designed and completed both. Also, the local arts council painted colorful and fun animal portraits to hang throughout the main shelter building.

The shelter is more comfortable, clean, and safe for the animals.

Coal severance money purchased new cat condo housing to replace open wire cages. This new housing setup decreases the chances of spreading illnesses and gives cats space as well as places to hide away if they wish.

A grant helped the shelter purchase new dog beds that are easy to clean and durable. They also give the dogs the chance to sleep off the ground comfortably.

Recently, coal severance money was used to construct a large fenced-in area for the dogs to play and interact. Jail inmates walk the dogs regularly, but the fenced area also allows them to run off leash. This is great for the dogs, but also gives staff the opportunity to deep clean kennels while the dogs are out.

The shelter is more energy efficient.

Jail staff and inmates enclosed the outdoor dog kennels. Coal severance tax money provided a roof and spray foam insulation for the dog kennel building as well as paid for lighting improvements. Further, grants and coal severance money purchased and installed a solar array and battery back up for the shelter. Within the first three months of being up and running, this project saved the county over $860 in power bills. This will also provide power backup for some systems at the shelter during outages.
